When your site (or a page) has one or more broken links, when the search engine's spider comes to index your page, it detects those errors and thus your page rank goes down. If you have few pages in your websites with few links, you may find broken links manually and correct them.
But, when there are many, say thousands of pages, and they have lots of links, it is impractical to check all the links manually. How to check then?

You may add a link to ask your user to send some sort of report, (eg: e-mail) when they come across any broken link pages in your website.
